4 Tips for Selecting a Moving Company

Research moving companies to find one that you can trust.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) website, bbb.org, is a great starting point to begin researching moving companies. Please note that the BBB receives thousands of moving company complaints each year and that all moving companies are not the same. Two main types of movers to consider include full-service and self-service.

Full-service moving companies have additional licensing that local moving companies may not have. Due to transporting household goods over state lines, full-service moving companies have a U.S. DOT number that can be verified on the U.S. Department of Transportation’s website. A full-service, “white-glove” moving company can pack all of your belongings, load, and transport, unload, and unpack at the destination. The movers are generally full-time employees who have completed and passed a background check and drug test.

With self-serve moving, typically you pack your own belongings. Moving laborers may offer an option for local moving of small residences. They are not full-service movers and are typically only used for heavy lifting and transporting belongings to a new home. They may not be licensed or carry specialty insurance. The movers may be temporary workers who have not completed a background or drug test screening.
